Day 6: El Calafate - El Chaltén
Transfer to El Chaltén.
Lago del Desierto and Vespignani Glacier excursion.
Early departure from El Calafate. After traveling about 30 km eastward, the iconic Route 40 is taken, bordering much of the journey along the east bank of Lago Argentino and the coasts of the Santa Cruz River. Then you reach Río La Leona, which gives its name to the lodge and hotel of the La Estela estate.
A stop is made there to learn about the history of La Leona lodge and hotel, where those who wish may enjoy a warm beverage with homemade pastries. Then continue to El Chaltén, bordering Lago Viedma, with photo stops along the way.
Around 10:30 am you arrive in El Chaltén. From there, travel 36 km to Lago del Desierto on a scenic road through forests and along the Río de las Vueltas.
From the Punta Sur dock, navigate about 30 minutes spotting the Huemul and Crestón glaciers, to disembark at the Vespignani Glacier sector, located in the middle of the lake. Under supervision of an activity coordinator, you may choose to walk one of three marked trails in the Vespignani Glacier Reserve, according to desired difficulty and effort. The most demanding trail takes about 45 minutes at a slow pace, with 150 m of elevation gain, to the base of the glacier and an elevated view of the north face of Cerro Fitz Roy.
The intermediate trail, with gentle and constant slope, leads in 15 minutes to a panoramic viewpoint with glacier views. You may also opt for or complement with the interpretive trail, without climbs, through the forested and coastal area of the reserve.
After a farewell snack, you return by boat to Punta Sur dock. From there the bus transfers you back to El Chaltén.

At the visitor center you board the "jungle train", an ecological transport that penetrates the Misiones rainforest until reaching the "Devil's Throat" station. From that point begins the walk along the walkways towards one of Argentina's most breathtaking landscapes, facing the waterfall that gives the place its name: Devil's Throat, where the Unión Falls is located, indescribable in its beauty and energy, which moves everyone. A must-see!
The tour continues to the "Waterfalls" station, from where you can take the Upper Walk, a 500-meter route, or the Lower Walk, a series of walkways that allow you to observe this natural wonder from another perspective.
To complete this unforgettable experience, it is recommended to optionally book "The Great Adventure: baptism of the Waterfalls", a combination of a boat ride in Zodiac boats, traveling 6 km along the lower Iguazú River and crossing rapids until entering the Devil's Throat Canyon, along with a ride in open double-traction vehicles through the rainforest, with the possibility of observing the flora and, if luck allows, the fauna of the place. For this excursion it is advisable to bring insect repellent, sneakers and comfortable clothing. Accommodation.
