Day 4: Ushuaia - Antarctica
The National Park represents the southernmost protected area of Argentina. It is the only one with maritime coasts and mountains. It is accessed via National Route 3 about 11 km southwest of Ushuaia.
On this tour we will discover the Pipo River, Monte Susana, Acigami Lake, Alacush Visitor Center, Laguna Verde and Bahía Lapataia where the Pan-American route system ends.
We will make stops to take photographs and a walk of about 30 minutes that will be subject to weather conditions.
The topography of the Park is extremely varied, featuring a succession of steep mountains, rivers, valleys, lakes until reaching the coast of the Beagle Channel.
Throughout the year you can admire the sub-Antarctic forest.
The most frequent mammal is the Fueguian red fox.
The variety of marine and mountainous environments allows species of birds to inhabit here ranging from the caiquén, the giant woodpecker, the tit-babbler and the Patagonian thrush, to the caranca cauquén symbol of the National Park.
→ Optional: End of the World Train.
Boarding in the afternoon and meet your expedition staff and lecturers. After getting comfortable in your cabin, we will navigate the famous Beagle Channel, through Mackinlay Passage.
Accommodation.
Day 5: Crossing Drake Passage
Named after the famous explorer Sir Francis Drake navigated these waters in 1578, Drake Passage is the setting of the Antarctic Convergence, a natural biological barrier where cold polar waters sink beneath the warmer waters from the north. This generates a large quantity of nutrients that sustain the biodiversity of this region.
Drake Passage also marks the northern limit of many Antarctic seabirds. As we navigate through the passage, our staff will be with you outside on deck to assist you in identifying the enormous variety of seabirds, including the albatrosses that follow the USHUAIA.
The onboard policy of "open bridge" will allow you to accompany our officers on the bridge and learn some aspects concerning navigation, observe whales or simply enjoy the view. A full program of lectures will be waiting for you.
Accommodation.
Day 6: Crossing Drake Passage
The first icebergs and snow-capped mountains indicate that we have arrived at the South Shetland Islands, an archipelago of 20 islands and islets discovered in 1819 by Captain William Smith with his brig Williams. If conditions in Drake Passage were favorable, on the third day our expedition staff will accompany you on the first landing and you will experience a fascinating encounter with penguins and seals.
Accommodation.
Day 7: Discovering the South Shetland Islands
The South Shetland Islands are full of wildlife. Vast colonies of penguins, beaches governed by Antarctic fur seals and southern elephant seals make each day in this island group unforgettable. Sailing through the narrow passage to the flooded caldera of Deception Island is truly remarkable.
Accommodation.
Day 8: South Shetland Islands
King George Island is the largest island of the South Shetland Islands and is characterized by colonies of Gentoo and Chinstrap penguins, kelp gull, imperial cormorant, Antarctic tern and southern giant petrel. Scientific bases from different countries are also found here. Chinstrap penguins, Gentoo penguins, as well as elephant seals, await you on Livingston Island.
Accommodation.
Day 9: Antarctic Peninsula
Upon learning the remarkable history of the Antarctic Peninsula, you will be moved in a way comparable to how the first explorers were. You will have sufficient time to explore its incredible landscape, a pristine desert of snow, ice, mountains and waterways, and the incredible and wide variety of wildlife. In addition to penguins and seabirds, you will also be able to see up close crabeater seals, Weddell seals and leopard seals, as well as humpback whales, Minke whales and orcas.
We hope to navigate some of the most beautiful channels, always depending on ice conditions: Gerlache Strait, Neumayer Channel and Lemaire Channel are narrow passages between impressive rocks and spectacular glaciers.
Accommodation.
Day 10: Antarctic Peninsula and excursions
We plan to conduct at least two land excursions per day. Sites for these excursions may also include Paradise Bay, literally the best-named place in the world, where we will seek to make an appropriate landing on the continent. After crossing the iceberg-covered waters of Antarctic Strait we hope to visit the active colonies of Adelie penguins and imperial cormorants on Paulet Island. The Nordenskjöld Expedition built a stone shelter here in 1903, ruins that today have been invaded by penguin nests.
Other possible explorations could take us to the Melchior Islands, Cuverville Island, Portal Point, Neko Harbour, Pleneau Island and, if ice conditions permitted, to Petermann Island to visit the southernmost colony of Gentoo penguins.
Accommodation.
Day 11: Crossing Drake Passage
We will leave the Antarctic Peninsula and head north, crossing Drake Passage. Join our lecturers and naturalists on deck in search of seabirds and whales.

Day 12: Crossing Drake Passage
Enjoy some of the final lectures. Take time to relax and reflect on the fascinating adventures of the past few days on the way back to Ushuaia.
