Day 8: Puerto Natales - Balmaceda & Serrano Navigation
The Balmaceda and Serrano glaciers are located within Bernardo O'Higgins National Park, 31 miles northwest of Puerto Natales in the Andes Mountains. This excursion offers the opportunity to admire a majestic landscape virtually untouched by human intervention. Access is exclusively by sea, navigating through the Ultima Esperanza Fjord, named in 1557 by an expedition searching for the Strait of Magellan from the Pacific Ocean.
The journey begins at the Puerto Natales pier. Along the route, you can observe the Bories cold-storage plant—formerly one of Patagonia's largest meat processing facilities—as well as colonies of Imperial Cormorants and Sea Lions. The local flora includes species such as Coigüe, Canelo, Lenga, Ñire, Chilco, and Calafate. While the Balmaceda glacier is viewed from the vessel, visiting the Serrano glacier requires a 20-minute walk along a trail bordering a proglacial lake. Return to the hotel. Overnight stay.
