Day 2: San José
Tour to Irazú Volcano
Irazú Volcano National Park is located a few kilometers from Cartago, a relatively short and pleasant trip through beautiful scenery. You will reach the summit of Irazú Volcano, and along the way you will encounter all types of vegetation.
Once in the Park, a short hike awaits you. It is easy to reach the main crater where, on clear days, you can see its lagoon as well as the Atlantic and Pacific oceans.
Next, you will visit the city of Cartago and admire the Basilica of the Angels, which, according to religious tradition, is a pilgrimage site for many believers.
Lankester Garden
After visiting the Basilica, the next stop is the Lankester Botanical Garden, a research center of the University of Costa Rica specializing in the protection and study of orchids, while also featuring other species such as bromeliads, cacti, and more.
Orosi Valley
As your final destination, you will visit the Orosi Valley. Here you will find one of the few remaining colonial churches, and in this town you can enjoy a delicious typical lunch at one of the local restaurants.
Day 3: San José - La Fortuna
Shared transfer from San José to Arenal
Your transfer from San José to Arenal will be a scenic and relaxing journey through the lush Costa Rican countryside. Along the way, you will enjoy beautiful views of rolling hills, charming rural towns, and the impressive landscapes that lead to the majestic Arenal Volcano.
It's the perfect way to begin your adventure!
La Fortuna is home to Arenal's largest recreation area. The entire region is a tropical paradise for outdoor activities. Volcanic vistas enhance the landscapes and increase the enjoyment of thermal waters. A lake and several rivers will attract you to the diverse water activities available. Refreshing waterfalls will reward you after hikes, offering natural pools and spectacular views.
Arenal Volcano is one of Costa Rica's most remarkable natural wonders. Standing at 1,657 meters (5,437 feet), this volcano has remained inactive since 2010. However, this does not make it any less majestic to behold, as it is practically a giant that reaches toward the region's sky. Rising above the rainforest that surrounds it, Arenal Volcano frames the horizon with nearly perfect symmetry.
Day 4: La Fortuna
Guided hike to Arenal Volcano and entrance to Paradise Hot Springs with dinner
The rainforest of Arenal Volcano and Natural History along with the impressive lava flow will take you through the lush tropical jungle along the base of Costa Rica's most famous volcano. Your experienced naturalist guide will show you interesting plants and wildlife in the vibrant primary and secondary forest of the natural reserve bordering Arenal Volcano Park 1968. You will then reach the Arenal Volcano observation point, which is the closest you can get to the base of Arenal Volcano, and the perfect vantage point for taking beautiful photos of the volcano. This hike lasts approximately 1.5 to 2 hours.
Then it's time to head to Paradise Hot Springs, perfect for relaxing in natural thermal water pools and hot tubs of different temperatures with hydrotherapy focused on the back, legs, and feet. The resort also respects maximum visitor capacity to provide a peaceful environment. There are showers, massage service and body treatments, food and beverages, as well as reclining chairs, umbrellas, and relaxing music in the pool areas. All the elements necessary for a magnificent and relaxing experience. Here you will enjoy a delicious dinner.
Day 5: La Fortuna - Rincón de la Vieja
Private transfer from Arenal to Rincón de la Vieja
Rincón de la Vieja is home to Rincón de la Vieja Volcano National Park. Rincón de la Vieja is located in northwestern Guanacaste, very close to Liberia, and this place is perfect for great activities for visitors to enjoy such as hiking trails and horseback rides, which are excellent ways to enjoy the natural beauty of the area and have memorable adventures. There are numerous waterfalls in the area, the largest being Oropéndola Waterfall and La Victoria Waterfall, which flow into the Colorado River.
In the sections of the National Park, the Pailas area and the Santa María area, here you will find trails to waterfalls, fumaroles, and mud pools.
Day 6: Rincón de la Vieja
Hike to the Las Pailas Sector of Rincón de la Vieja National Park
The Las Pailas sector spectacularly displays the power of Rincón de la Vieja Volcano, the most active and largest volcano in Guanacaste. Fumaroles, bubbling mud pots, and many other attractions provide an experience you will not find at any other volcano in Costa Rica.
With a naturalist guide, you will walk the 3.5 km circular trail of Las Pailas through dry tropical forest to enjoy the best views of the volcano, volcanic activity, incredible nature, and wildlife sightings. This is an area with more than 300 bird species and many other animals, such as peccaries, armadillos, coatis, iguanas, and white-faced, howler, and spider monkeys.
Oropéndola Waterfall
When you finish the hike, prepare yourself for a refreshing dip in the La Oropéndola waterfall. From the national park entrance there is a short walk along a trail with varied terrain that leads to the river. You will also walk a short distance in the river until you reach the waterfall. La Oropéndola waterfall, with its impressive 25 meters, falls into a sparkling turquoise pool in the lush canyon of the Río Blanco, creating an incredible tropical oasis. After relaxing for a while at the waterfall, these one-day tours in Guanacaste end with the hike back to Hacienda Guachipelín.
Day 7: Rincón de la Vieja - San José
Private transfer from Rincón de la Vieja to San José.
Day 8: San José
Coffee tour in Doka
On the way to Poás Volcano, we will visit the Doka Coffee Plantation to taste a delicious breakfast and take a guided tour of the coffee plantation where we will learn about the current and ancient techniques used by experts to process our gold grain and produce one of Costa Rica's finest coffees.
Poás Volcano
Once the coffee explanation is finished, we will continue our journey toward Poás Volcano. As you ascend toward the volcano, you will notice the difference in microclimates and vegetation, appreciating the great diversity of agriculture present during the trip, including: ferns, flowers, strawberries, as well as livestock farms and views of the central valley creating a beautiful landscape.
At the volcano we will have time to enjoy the impressive main crater with its sulfur fumaroles, and we will walk along a trail to the beautiful Botos Lagoon while learning about the different ecosystems of the park.
La Paz Waterfall
We will continue our journey toward La Paz Waterfalls. Upon arrival, we will walk along a beautiful trail that leads to different park attractions, including the aviary, the country's largest butterfly observatory, the hummingbird gallery, the serpentarium, the frog exhibit, monkeys, and felines.
Eventually, a delicious buffet-style lunch awaits you in the midst of the rainforest. After lunch, we will take a hike where we can visit three magnificent natural waterfalls formed by the same La Paz River. It is worth noting that this hike is conducted in the humid tropical forest sector and includes steps in some parts of the trail. The trail is paved.
