Day 5: Boca Tapada - Río Celeste/Bijagua
Drive from Boca Tapada to Río Celeste/Bijagua
If you are looking for a peaceful trip, you can visit Bijagua de Upala, a small town near the entrance to Volcán Tenorio National Park. Río Celeste becomes blue at a point where two clear water tributaries meet, this point is known as El Teñidor. Scientists have formulated different theories trying to explain how Río Celeste gets its color. It has recently been discovered that the rocks at the bottom of the river have a mineral layer that includes silicon, oxygen and aluminum. It is the abundance of these minerals, as well as the reflection of sunlight, that gives the water its incredible color.
