Day 4: Puerto Viejo de Talamanca
Guided hike to Gandoca-Manzanillo Wildlife Refuge
This area is characterized as a mixed protected zone, which means it is protected by both the State and civil society, as part of the reserve is government-owned and another part is privately owned by local residents. The route consists of a 10 km (5 km there and 5 km back) trail located in the Manzanillo sector. This trail possesses amazing biodiversity; every corner is full of life in this tropical rainforest, and tourists can also enjoy viewpoints with ocean views and scenic beauty found only in the South Caribbean of Costa Rica.
During the hike, the trail crosses beautiful beaches and forests, among giant trees such as fig trees, ceiba and silk cotton trees. It is also possible to observe various animal species such as white-faced monkeys, howler monkeys, sloths, tayras, iguanas, basilisks, eyelash pit vipers, woodpeckers, toucans, common black hawks, among others, depending on what mother nature decides to show us.
Throughout the activity, you will be accompanied by one of our naturalist guides, who will interpret the trails by explaining the dynamics of the ecosystem present in the refuge, as well as some information about the history and culture of the South Caribbean of Costa Rica.
